Ubuntu 9.04: Fast Starter
Canonical has released its next Ubuntu offering in its typical half-year cycle. Fresh software and a faster startup characterize the new distro.
Given the name Jaunty Jackalope by Ubuntu patron Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu 9.04 has Kernel 2.6.28-11, the GNOME 2.26.1 and KDE 4.2.2 desktops, X.org-Server 1.6
and OpenOffice in version 3.0.1. Shuttleworth also insisted on faster boot performance, which the developers delivered mainly by fine tuning the boot process, without requiring special software.
Newly included is support for the ext4 filesystem (from Kernel 2.6.28) that is an available choice at partitioning. Ubuntu is set up as a Live system that can turn into a full installation. The project provides an overview and download as 32-bit or 64-bit. It was just in the prior week that we had announced its first release candidate.
