FBReader 0.10.0 with Extended Language Support

Jan 14, 2009

The e-book reader FBReader 0.10.0 has been released for Linux and now supports more languages, including right-to-left and bidirectional.

Next to displaying RTL languages such as Hebrew and Arabic, the new FBReader supports documents containing RTL and LTR in the same paragraph. Developers also improved its ePub and Mobipocket format support. The name FBReader derives from the FictionBook e-book format popularized in Russia.

Library view of the FBReader allows for author or keyword sorting. Double-clicks now select words and triple-clicks select whole paragraphs. And the new default is to use the OS-provided scrollbar for text navigation.

Network capabilities allow the e-book program to search for and download from online libraries. The developers ensure through a privacy notice that no personal information is sent to the libraries without user consent.

Although FBReader is available for a variety of platforms from desktops to PDAs and mobile phones, the 0.10.0 release is exclusively for Linux and Windows desktops and netbooks. Other packages are to follow. The download site provides Debian/Ubuntu and openSUSE packages, a tarball for other Linux distros and Windows binaries for XP and Vista
