4Pane file manager – An optimal fit
Configuration
Pretty much all of the program's aspects are configurable. Where necessary, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to nearly all actions and modify them accordingly. However, not everything works as you would expect. Sometimes new combinations do not overwrite the old ones; the developer has promised to ensure more clarity.
The program saves configuration data in the .4Pane
file in your home directory. There you will find all the settings in a relatively simple format – together more than 10KB of data. A few more empty lines might improve the clarity, though.
Conclusions
Although the 4Pane file manager initially appears relatively simple, much of the developer's practical knowledge and expertise are embedded in the program – above all in the easy way of defining add-ons and the sophisticated configuration.
The control concept is pretty mature: The hierarchical structure provides a clearer overview than many other file managers can offer. After a short period of familiarization, you will have a practical tool that you will not want to be without.
