The whois utility is one of those classic Unix command-line tools that searches available online data and provides information on Internet resources. It is actually impressive that whois is still in use after so many venerable Unix tools have faded, but actually, whois might be about to take a back seat. RDAP does the same thing whois does but over HTTPS, so it provides better security and doesn't require another open port on the firewall. You'll learn about RDAP in this month's Linux Voice.
