Ubuntu is one of the most popular Debian derivatives. MATE is a fork of Gnome 2.0, and in the 25.04 release (aka Plucky Puffin) release, Ubuntu MATE celebrates its 10th anniversary.

In addition to kernel and systemd updates, the general Ubuntu 25.4 release improves the handling of Qt-based applications and the removal of third-party packages. It also includes a new NTSYNC driver that improves the performance of Windows games that run on Wine and Proton. Ubuntu MATE 25.04 itself is noteworthy mainly for improvements to full disk encryption during installation. These improvements consist of additional partition options and improved interaction with other operating systems, particularly BitLocker-enabled Windows installations.
