CeBIT 2009: Garmin presents Nüvifone with Linux
US navigation specialist Garmin has shown off their nüvifone G60 at the 2009 CeBIT in Hanover.
Developed in cooperation with Asus, the Linux-based cell phone with integrated navigation system and camera is still classed as a prototype, with the finished model expected sometime this year, price unknown.
The G60 comes with touchscreen, horizontal adjustable display and pre-set dashboard fittings, which makes for a pleasing, sophisticated impression. The display is clear and easy to read - important for navigation.
The nüvifone takes (3 mega pixel) pictures which save location data. Geo-tagging is yet another function. Pure navigation requires no mobile connection but features such as Points of Interest, etc,. will need a connection and generate costs.
Garmin has deepened its cooperation with Asus. Safe in a secure glass cabinet on display at the CeBIT lies a comparable device with Windows Mobile, and an Android phone with navigational abilities is expected soon.
