Chrome OS: Google's Chromium Arrives (Gallery)
The source code for Chrome OS, alias Chromium, the Linux-based operating system developed by Google, is now ready for download.
Having been announced months ago and followed up by many questions as to features, availability and supporting companies, Google's Chrome OS has now officially stepped into the operating system market. At first glance the completely Web- and browser-based platform doesn't quite meet expectations in terms of the great revolution it promised.
Google primarily sees its operating system deployed on secondary systems. In a webcast to accompany the launch, netbooks were all the talk. Google promises that devices running Chromium will be out by end of 2010. The devices should be somewhat larger than the usual netbooks with their maximum 12" display and should have a complete keyboard.
