Free RHEL: CentOS 5.4 Ready

Oct 22, 2009

The CentOS Project has released its Community Enterprise Linux in version 5.4, and for the first time, a Live CD for i386 is simultaneously available.

The distribution is derived from freely licensed components of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), which is why, in technical terms, the distro correlates with the upstream release RHEL 5.4. The new version has improved KVM virtualization and updated the GCC version to 4.4.

A detailed overview of the new and modified packages can be found in the release notes. The latest CentOS is currently available for Intel 32 and 64 bit architecture and a 32 bit live CD with a 64 bit edition yet to be announced.

Images for installation media are available as bit torrent and from download mirrors. CentOS users can also update via Yum.
