MeeGo Chosen to Become Platform for In-Car Infortainment
Expect to see MeeGo in a car near you.
GENIVI, the nonprofit industry alliance that was founded by BMW, Delphi, Intel, GM, PSA, Wind River and Magneti-Marelli, announced that MeeGo would become the operating platform for the next generation of In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) devices. IVI applications include entertainment services, GPS navigation and broadband internet functionality. The first iteration of the MeeGo-based platform will be called GENIVI Apollo.
“We selected MeeGo as the open source basis for our platform because it is technically innovative and can provide the cross architecture build support we require for our references,” said Graham Smethurst, President of GENIVI.
No word on when MeeGo-base systems will be available in vehicles or how widely adopted the platform will be. GM. for example, is a founding member of GENIVI and recently announced a partnership with Google to leverage Google Map technology in its OnStar suite of services. The MeeGo Project encourages automakers to download the initial release and contribute to the platform.

Meego
As vehicle owners continue to embrace entertainment and high technology in their vehicle, Meego is just the thing that they are looking for. I could just imagine how great it would be to have your own internet connection in your own car, truck or van.
Business trips, family vacations or just a simple road trip is made more exciting with this newly developed technology. I just hope it doesn't cost that much and would be very much accessible to all consumers. In addition, it would be an additional point of interest if it would be made user-friendly. This is also to encourage those people who are not very much acquainted with technology to try and use it.
